The bullet-points are so frequently recited they can almost be announced in unison: their repudiation of the music video, their now-legendary tussle with Ticketmaster, their insistence on releasing their records on vinyl a week before they came out on CD. Lately, the group shucked the whole major label system, releasing their latest album, Backspacer, on their own, with exclusive distribution in Target and several small independent outlets. Commercial fallout be damned, Pearl Jam built their reputation on a stubborn insistence to follow their own muse.

All of which only served to make their crowd-pleasing festival-closing set Sunday at Austin City Limits that much more astonishing. Abandoning any impulse to confound or to frustrate, the group instead delivered a jaw-dropping, white-hot two-hour cavalcade of hits, one that served to aggressively reassert their relevance while casting a clean light on their past. It was by any measure the best show of the weekend. ve been here three days, Eddie Vedder said early in the evening, and in those three days weve received many, many gifts. So were going to do our best to return the favor. (Check out video from the bands set, plus footage of the Dead Weather, above.)

Experience Austin City Limits in our best live photos.

Vedder laced a series of steely guitar runs through opener Why Go? and slashed a jagged path up the center of What was most breathtaking about the set was its brute, blunt force, and the ferocity with which the band tore into the songs. Hail, Hail and Even Flow on which Mike McCready heaved his guitar behind his head and peeled off an endless, blistering solo operated at almost twice their usual speed, Vedder hurling his body across the stage, punctuating verses with punches and leaps. If Vedder is the groups outspoken firebrand, McCready is their (not so) secret weapon. His playing on Sunday was adroit without being flashy, setting the punkier numbers ablaze with nimble, looping solos.

The groups reliance on classic material afforded an opportunity to see how much theyve grown. Taken on its own The Fixer, the sterling new single from Backspacer, is a charmer, Vedder wandering through the world and setting aright all of the things that seem askew (When somethings cold/let me put a little fire on it). But coming as it did between a scorching State of Love and Trust and a volcanic, borderline-hardcore take on the songs steely optimism felt that much more earned.

Check out backstage photos of Phoenix, Avett Brothers, Blitzen Trapper and more at ACL.

For a band with a new record to flog and a good one, at that the band went light on recent songs, the best of which, the taut, hammering Got Some found Vedder frantically barking out lyrics. Despite their affinity for the guitar solo, Pearl Jams best songs operate at warp speed, and display a cannier knack for the nuances of melody than many of their supposed disciples. On Sunday it was their roots in punk rock that felt the most pronounced, with songs like Do the Evolution little more than grizzled hunks of sound.

Vedder remained chatty and good-natured. He tossed the refrain of former opening act Sleater-Kinneys Modern Girl at the end of Not for You (a song that sounded even nastier and more confrontational now then when it was released) and shared a rambling anecdote about how he and Ben Harper had been up until 8:30 that morning, during which they had figured out the solution to the worlds problems (We wrote it down. The trouble is, its just scribble you cant read it). Harper later joined the group on stage, lacing up Red Mosquito with snarling lap steel.

The set was so inspired that it was easy to forgive the band for ending on a note of shameless nostalgia. First, they were joined by Perry Farrell who Vedder announced as a guy who invented everything were doing up here, and probably most of what youre doing out there for a thundering take on Janes Addictions Mountain Song. And, like theyve done for years, the show ended with a ragged run through Neil Youngs in the Free World. It was a safe bet, but that didnt make it any less satisfying which, of course, is part of the perfect paradox of Pearl Jam: the only band in the business that confounds expectations by fulfilling them.

Set list:

Why Go?

Got Some
Not For You
Modern Girl (Sleater-Kinney Cover, Partial)
Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town
Given to Fly
World Wide Suicide
Even Flow
Unthought Known

(Partial)
Hail, Hail

Present Tense
State of Love & Trust
The Fixer

Red Mosquito (w/ Ben Harper)
Do the Evolution
The Real Me (The Who Cover)

Mountain Song (Janes Addiction cover w/ Perry Farrel)
in the Free World

Check out the photos here

From www.perryfarrell.com
Tue, 06 Oct 2009 14:20:00 -0700http://www.perryfarrell.com/news/5671L.A Confidential

Check out Perry's latest L.A. Think of all the miles driven, the trash generated and the energy used by speakers, lights and other stage equipment. But some festivals, like Lollapalooza, are seeking to turn those negatives around and create a more carbon-neutral experience, while sharing a few eco tips along the way.

Lollapalooza, which was hosted in Chicagos Grant Park August 7-9, tried to offset the emissions generated by transportation and on-site waste.

The music drew in spectators from all over the country. Over 130 bands performed, with top acts like The Killers, Kings of Leon and Tool. In fact, Janes Addictions Perry Farrell led efforts to make Lollapalooza a more Earth-friendly affair.

Organizers got to work looking for places to cut down on energy emissions. Considering the number of bands, the size of the park and the enormity of the crowd, it looked like a daunting task. But the complexity of planning a weekend music festival also provides plenty of places for small changes, which added together, can really make a dent.

The stages themselves were subject to Generators were run on a biodiesel mix, electricity was substituted for solar energy in certain spots and high-efficiency lighting replaced standard systems whenever possible. From there, organizers got vigilant about recycling. There were volunteers at designated recycling booths who handed out plastic bags to collect plastic, glass and aluminum bottles and cans. Known as Rock & Recycle centers, volunteers at these booths also gave free T-shirts to anyone who returned with a bag full of recyclables.

Near the center of Grant Park was Green Street, a quaint strip of eco-friendly retailers selling clothing, jewelry bags and the like. There, festival goers could sign up for the $800 Savings Challenge. Sponsored by the Chicago Climate Action Plan, this challenge was a list of home and lifestyle changes that add up to over $800 in one year. Suggestions include reducing your home heating temperature by three degrees ($129 savings), keeping you car tuned up and tires inflated ($185 savings) and eliminating ten miles of driving each week ($51 savings). According to their figures, in one year a person could offset 2.92 metric tons of carbon dioxide.

At the entrance to Green Street stood the Green Mountain Energy Company booth. This company played a big role in reducing Lollapaloozas carbon footprint: They sell renewable energy credits and forest sequestration offsets. They also sold $5 tags that offset carbon emissions. In fact, last year fans purchased enough credits to eliminate 5.5 million tons of carbon dioxide from being released.

Finally, there was the Green Card. Located at the back of every festival program, the Green Card was an entry form to win a Honda Insight. The catch was, each Green Card needed three stamps in order to be entered into the contest.

Lollapalooza fans had several different options for stamping their green card: visiting the Honda Eco Zone, riding public transportation or a bike to Grant Park, bringing a reusable water bottle, buying one of the fan tags or visiting the booth of a nonprofit organization. Returning one of those bags with recyclables to a Rock & Recycle center was worth three stamps alone.

So on a sunny weekend in the windy city, you could hear some great music, savor the atmosphere and feel pretty good about your impact on the planet. Lollapalooza organizers purchased enough carbon credits to offset their own vehicles, travel and generators, and prodded fans to take few more steps. With ample opportunity to party a little greener, fans walked away with plenty of tidbits on how to carry these changes over into their everyday routines.

Article byBy Julie Karceski

From www.perryfarrell.com
Wed, 02 Sep 2009 14:20:00 -0700http://www.perryfarrell.com/news/3701Playing dress-up with Etty Farrell: Venus Zine behind the scenes at Lollapalooza 2009

On thefinal nightLollapalooza 2009,Venus Zinereceived a special invitation from Etty Farrell to join her in the Janes Addiction trailer for a behind-the-scenes look at the top-secret wardrobe for that nights anticipated finale.

After being transported across the park by a golf cart, we waited as Etty wrapped up dance rehearsals before welcoming us all into the tight, closed-door quarters. I would love to live in the YSL closet, she said. Etty also wore a custom-made silver necklace emblazoned with the logo from Perrys Stage: a reminder of just how successful the Lollapalooza festival has become, and how important that nights Janes reunion was for the band, who made history with the first incarnation of the fest.

Lollapalooza 91 was created for the Janes Addiction farewell show, and now this is the first time in 18 years where everybody has come back to perform together, said Etty, as she described all the planning that went into the aesthetics of the nights show.

It was a return to the stage for Etty herself, who first met her husband, Janes Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell, as a dancer during the bands 97 Relapse Tour. For the elaborate set, Etty said she found a dancer who is nearly her twin to join her onstage for several numbers during one of which the duo would attempt to recreate the cover art from the Janes Addictions album,Nothings Shocking(Warner Bros., 1998). The costumes were designed bythe Brazilian-baseddesigner Ligia Morris. For the shoes, Etty chose pointy-toed slippers, a throwback to her training days as a classical ballerina. The final pieces were gray Marie Antoinettestyle hairpieces with shocks of neon pink and yellow. At Lollapalooza, he hosted Perry's, a dance area that included acts like Simian Mobile Disco, Kid Cudi and MSTRKRFT, he spins at the Coachella dance tents under the name DJ Peretz and he's lent his vocal prowess to acts like Thievery Corporation, Hybrid and, most recently, Infected Mushroom. Now, he tells Spinner that he's embracing the culture even further on his upcoming solo work. "I've been working with people like Danja, who worked with Britney Spears, and people like Kaskade, who worked with Deadmau5," he says. Never one to shy away from speaking his mind, Farrell tells Spinner that he sees the scene as the new frontier in music, in part because it shares the openness and experimentation of past movements. "If you look at Woodstock and listen to the music and look at the kids that went and the musicians, I would say it was very fueled by LSD. Then the era of Lollapalooza, it was fueled by coke and heroin," he says. "You look at the dance world and it's fueled by mushrooms and ecstasy and, in all honesty, music and mind alterations go hand in hand. If you look at the scenes that changed the course of human history they've been fueled by mind-altering drugs." To prove his argument he goes back even further. "It's experimentation and I think you can date the experimentation and art back to the impressionists, back to the Dadaists," he says. "I think there's always a healthy scene there when you have experimentation and I think it's still very much there and alive in the dance culture."

From www.perryfarrell.com
Mon, 24 Aug 2009 19:00:00 -0700http://www.perryfarrell.com/news/1470CNN - Lollapalooza 2009
Sights and sounds from the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago.

Lollapalooza Clip One

Family fun at Kidzapalooza

From www.perryfarrell.com
Mon, 24 Aug 2009 01:00:00 -0700http://www.perryfarrell.com/news/1457USA TODAY: The Lollapalooza wrap up and low down.

Rain? Instead, he felt, Vegas is where they come for money. And sometimes I believe that. Bands are well aware that audiences here are notorious for only caring about hits, and then there are all the before-show opportunities to party in Vegas. Slash once confessed to me that a New Year's Eve Vegas show was the only time in his career he walked onstage too incapacitated by drink to really play as well as he should. Generally all these factors add up to a lot of mediocre rock concerts. Then add that it still does not pay to bring concerts like Leonard Cohen (who was playing L.A. this weekend) to Vegas. But then there are moments like Saturday night, which restored my faith in the Strip to create the impossible.

I can't honestly say Saturday was the greatest rock concert musically I've been at in Vegas, because that honor goes to the White Stripes' aural assault Sept. 20, 2003 at the Hard Rock. But the celebration concert of Perry Farrell's 50th birthday this weekend was far more special than anything I have been lucky enough to witness before: original, totally unrepeatable, unpredictable, fun and, most important, featuring performances in Vegas that no one (even the participants) could ever have expected to hear together.

The poet John Keats in a letter once described the ability to hold two opposing ideas simultaneously without being disturbed by the contradictions "negative capability." Negative capability is the only phrase to describe the experience of Perrypalooza. Tickets for general admission were $115 and table reservations stated at $2,500, creating an elite, expensively dressed and extremely well groomed audience to gather around the Mirage pool and watch, among other highlights, the Stooges underground classic "Down on the Street" performed with Wayne Kramer of the even more underground MC5 on guitar -- a guitar, by the way, on which were inscribed the words "Arm the Homeless." The singer on "Down on the Street" was Billy Idol, whose roots go back to original British punk band Generation X and the guitar was borrowed by Kramer from Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine.

In short, it was a night of performances by the artists who inspired the hugely influential Jane's Addiction tied to performances by the those influenced by Farrell's first successful band. As the founder of Lollapalooza, Farrell has a list of friends that runs from CBGB punk through hip-hop. The opening act, for example, was up and coming rapper Mickey Avalon. Farrell also worked through his personal history. The first song he played, "Go All the Way (Into the Twilight)" was his latest offering available on "The Twilight" movie soundtrack. And from there came a reunions with Porno for Pyros followed by Jane's Addiction. In between, were the guest musicians including, among others, members of Cypress Hill, Matt Sorum, Juliette Lewis, Debbie Harry, Tom Morello and Billy Morrison. The powerhouse night ended as Farrrell held up a bottle of Champagne to toast the audience and the performers during the everyone-on-stage jam version of "Sympathy for the Devil"

From www.perryfarrell.com
Fri, 31 Jul 2009 13:42:43 -0700http://www.perryfarrell.com/news/1235PerryPalooza!

COME join us for some PLAYTIME and MISCHIEF...

From www.perryfarrell.com
Fri, 31 Jul 2009 13:41:24 -0700http://www.perryfarrell.com/news/1234Feelin' It!

Feelin' it in Miami Beach @ Ultra Fest. He zipped in to Toronto on April 9 to for a special performance at Decadance, a super-hyper-mega Easter weekend dance party at The Guvernment complex. But rather than spin discs as his alter-ego DJ Peretz, he brought along his wife/back-up singer/dancer Etty Farrell and ex-Mink guitarist/programmer Nick Maybury for a short set sampling music from across his career.

For the most part, the crowd had no idea who he was. Either that or they didn't care. But Farrell has always been a hippie and a rave child, so the father of the Lollapalooza generation played shaman to those few who crowded close to the stage and soaked up his good vibes.

Many hardcore Jane's fans would have cocked their pierced eyebrows to hear an alt.rock classic like "Stop!" pared down to little more than Perry's vocals and a techno breakdown. Hopefully they would have appreciated the most memorable part of the show: when Farrell bent over Etty and planted his face in her white cotton panty-clad behind.

It was all slightly unusual, but this was as genuine Farrell as it gets: joyous, strutting and singing with as much gusto (and processed effects, granted) as if he was headlining Coachella.

For those of us there only to witness this curious configuration of Farrell live, it was both entertaining and endearing. From PFP's dreamy "Tahitian Moon" to the happy, sappy "Go All The Way (Into The Twilight)" (his most recent single from the Twilight soundtrack), it warmed the cockels to see that three decades in he's still full of songs to sing and the desire to get out there and try new things for new people. It's also nice to see he still has a healthy head of hair, even if, as my friend pointed out, he's styling it like a suave '70s used car salesman.

If the upcoming NIN|JA tour featuring a reunited original Jane's lineup with Nine Inch Nails becomes the big summer ticket it's shaping up to be, this is surely the last time you'll be able to walk right up to the front row, reach out and grab Farrell's white pants while he sings something from Twilight into your eyes.

Happy birthday, Perry.
